Language Clinic – 2024

The ESOL programme at Henderson North School is for children who have english as their second language. The programme is run by Mrs Novata and Mrs Kay (Richardson) on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

We work with children in class andwithdraw groups. The programme is largely a topic based oral language programme. The topics covered are related to the school wide topic. Each topic is introduced prior to the topic being studied in class. This empowers the children in the topic as they have established an understanding and have a language base to build on.

WELCOME back to 2022

Hopefully most of our students will be back at school. We look forward to seeing you all.

Term Four, 2021.

Dear ESOL Students and parents,
I hope you are all keeping safe and happy in your bubbles at home. I will leave a few activities here for you to do until we can all be back at school together. You can contact me by emailing mnovata@hns.school.nz if you have any questions.

WEEK EIGHT

This week will be the last week of activities for this term. I want to wish you all a very happy holiday. I am really hopeful we will all be back together next year.

For those of you that researched a special celebration from your culture I would like you to use that information to make a poster. Below is an idea of what you might include on your poster.

For the rest of you here are some more Christmas Activities

In some countries it is wintertime when it is Christmas so they wear Christmas themed jerseys, but in New Zealand it is summertime so it is too hot to wear a jersey. Design a Christmas themed T-shirt for New Zealand people.

Draw a T-shirt like the one below and start designing.

WEEK SEVEN

In New Zealand we celebrate Christmas. It is a special celebration for many of us.

If your family does not celebrate Chistmas I would love you to tell me about a special celebration from your culture.

Talk to your family about it or research it.

-why do you celebrate it?

-how do you celebrate it?

-find out as much information as you can about it

-draw a picture of it

Welcome to Term Four 2021.

I was hoping we would be back at school but sadly we have to wait a bit longer.

There are still things to be grateful for. It is Spring! The weather is getting warmer, new animals and insects are appearing and there is more colour around thanks to blossoming trees and blooming flowers.

This week spend some time observing your surroundings with these activities.

This week let’s practice GRATITUDE!

What is gratitude?

Gratitude means you feel thankful and appreciative for what you have.

Gratitude isn’t just being grateful or thankful for the big things in your life, it’s about learning to notice the little things that happen that you can be happy about.

Let’s practice by finding something good in everyday this week.

Each day write something you are grateful for.

eg Today I am grateful that the sun is shining.

Look at the activities below and choose a few to do this week.

1. Make a gratitude flower. Write what you are grateful for on each petal.

WEEK FOUR ACTIVITIES

MOTHERS DAY

This coming weekend is Mothers Day. Mothers Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May each year. This year it is on Sunday the 10th of May. Mothers Day is a day to show our mothers love and respect and how much we appreciate all they do for us.

Task 1

Listen to this story and complete 1 and 2 below…

1. List the things the family did for their mother on Mothers Day.

2. Write 3 things you could do for your mother.

Task 2

Make your mother a Mothers Day card with a nice message inside.

Task 3

Try making a few vouchers/coupons as a gift for your mum to use. For example you could make one that says “I’ll do the dishes” and she can then use it anytime she likes. Other ideas might be vacuuming, tidying up, washing the car or keeping your room clean. Can you think of any others?

Make a list of as many Kiwiana things as you can, ask your family if they can add to your list.
